Linux on the Desktop

I do not have access to a Linux box, and will not for some time, which means I am unable to experiment with fvwm-crystal. It got a review on slashdot, but more interesting to me than the ‘eye-candy’ that they were interested in, is the fact that it is a desktop environment based around the ROX Filer.

Rox is an attempt to bring some of the look, feel and features of the RISC OS user interface to the unix world. RISC OS, despite being an operating system I haven’t used in almost a decade, remains the OS of which I have the fondest memories. Many of the features that made Windows 95 usable (compared to 3.1), or which make OS X feel well designed (such as application packages) were already part of RISC OS in 1989. Some of its best features have never made it into a mainstream OS.

If anyone takes a look at fvwm-crystal and feels like posting a review in the comments, I’d be very interested.
