Just when I was feeling more positive

Just when I was feeling a little more positive about this new iPhone thingy, I read this suggestion that the iPhone will not allow user-installable applications.

If true, it’s not likely to affect most users. But it will upset developers and reviewers.

But I suspect that what is actually the case is that “applications” will be installable on the phone – though obviously they will have to be written specially for whatever subset of Apple technologies that are on the telephone. Whether the developer kit will be made freely available (as the desktop tools are) or will be sold at great cost (as in the pre-OS X days) remains to be seen.

My bet, for what it is worth, is on the former, unless contracts with Google, Yahoo or the other partners tie Apple’s hands.
