Stolen passports amount for a good deal of fraud, but it is now possible for fraudsters to seal all the important data from your passport, without even opening the envelope in which it is delivered.
The technical details can be found at the Register, while the Express reports that the Home Office has already admitted the new passport is unsafe.
Of course, I don’t usually carry my passport around with me: an ID card would be an even worse proposition.
Question 1: was there any good reason to make passports remotely readable? I’ve never seen even an attempt to answer that, let alone a convincing answer.
Question 2: Who thinks that the lessons would be learned in time to make ID cards safe? No one? Thought not.
