Facebook

A Goldman Sachs trader has been warned to stop using the social networking site, Facebook, after the IT department noted that he had spent four hours a day using the website. He posted the email to Facebook, as the link shows.

There are probably several points of interest here, but what I find most interesting from the email he posted is the note from IT that the use of social networking websites is in itself banned, quite apart from any other violations of firm policy he might have committed.

GS probably see several dangers in Facebook: a way for their employees to negotiate being poached, perhaps, or a way for (possibly confidential) information to leave the company without appropriate controls.
